Kylie Sandt - Navajo Crit for Liz Ronneberg
I felt like it was a little difficult to critique the Navajo inspired pieces, specifically the ones that were almost entirely Navajo patterns. Such describes Liz's piece. However, she added a gold maze-like pattern over top of the rug pattern with a piece of plexiglass, this created a neat shadow effect (If it worked correctly. I didn't get a chance to see if it did.) With her piece she makes use of the symbol of infinity. I love the shadow idea and the colors of the wood and blue and gold paint work well together, but to me the piece still seems somewhat incomplete. I'm not sure if closing off the edges would help or not. It would have to be with more plexiglass or something else transparent because anything opaque might take something away from it...or would it? I'm not sure.

OK, good analysis. Can you speculate more on what you think it needs? Closing off the sides will make it more box like. How do you think this will effect it?
ReplyDeleteI see a sense of journey and confusion within the piece. A spiral (the one in the center of her piece) symbolizes "going up/coming down". In relation to the work, she took the square, spiral border design and repeated it all throughout on the Plexiglas, producing a maze-like pattern. It's as if she/the viewer doesn't know whether they're "coming or going." It's as if we're trying to get to the painting underneath, where enlightenment lies, which the calming blue and clear, symmetrical, more simple pattern suggests.
