Marie Strock_Individual Studio Proposal

Marie Strock_Independent Studio Project Proposal

The purpose of this project proposal is to identify and describe your intended course of study and work for the remainder of the semester, and to clarify your goals for what you hope to accomplish. Although changes will no doubt occur as you progress with your work, it is very helpful to have clear course of action to get started. Please be as specific and detailed as possible in answering the following:

1. What ideas, subject matter, and content are you interested in exploring in your work?
The subjects in which I intend to explore while in my work are of fantasy, taking characteristics of human qualities and other forms of cartoon based qualities into one(or a few) essential works.
2. What type of research do you feel would be helpful in developing your initial ideas for the work? (Artists, art historical movements, styles or time periods, social/ political / historical issues, other?) Research on filmmakers for animation studios and a social time period that distinguished that particular style of art. Particularly manga because it suits my style of interest.

3. List 3 to 5 reference works related to the above subject(s):
Mars : Fuyumi Soryo
Wolf’s Rain: Keiko Nobumoto
Inuyasha: Rumiko Takahashi
4. What types of art media and other materials do you plan to work with or experiment with? Acrylics, Watercolor Pencils, Cloth, etc.

5. What types of formats do you plan to work with? (2D, 3D, 2 & 3D combinations, installation, electronic) Possible 2D and 3D combinations.

6. Approximately how many and what sizes of works do you plan to make? (Take into account the amount of space you are likely to need to fill within the Cmun Hall Gallery)

16x20 Canvas’s, and around 4 or 5 works.

7. Describe your ideas for a work to be shown in the CC Student Activities space: Works that discuss recent issues, example: Haiti.

8. Describe your ideas for an installation and the work(s) you would like to make for the CC Display Case: Maybe a representative look into the rough sketches and ideas of the class.

9. What do you hope to achieve by completing a substantial body of work this semester? (increased drawing or painting skills, technical abilities w/specific media, other abilities)

I intend to have acquired a taste of what direction I want to go into and which materials of art that I want to delve deeper into. Taking a new set of ideas and materials with a little experience.

  1. So "manga" is your thing. And Mars : Fuyumi Soryo, Wolf’s Rain: Keiko Nobumoto Inuyasha: Rumiko Takahashi are the artists that interest you in this genre. Can you include examples in your sketchbook? That way the viewer will understand more how your work fits in. An issue with any mass production style of art throughout history is how does one's own work distinguish itself from the generic look of the style. From Disney, Pop, Art Nouveau, Impressionism, Romanticism, and even the High Renaissance, they all had a strong style and idealogical approach that challenged individual artists to come up with something that was personal and set them apart. So, how do YOU accomplish that. The best way is to try and say something personal with the style and see where it goes. Following that dictum will lead to a direction for your future work.

Materials: "Acrylics, Watercolor Pencils, Cloth, etc." Sounds good. Also, stay open to ideas about other materials that may occur to you during your studio time.

Semester's work: "16x20 Canvas’s, and around 4 or 5 works." I'd go for more as this is a bit light. You want to to have works to select from at the end rather than just enough to fill your space in the gallery.

AS far as what exactly will go where on display, that too can be decided later. The more you have, the more to choose from and likely a stronger presentation.

Sketchbook: "Something every day". I'll be asking to see next week and, of course, you can show it to me anytime.

    Keep Going!

  2. In question 4 you mentioned cloth as one of the materials that you wanted to use. Did you want to paint on the cloth or make figures out of cloth? Either way it would be awesome. I think that making your figures out of cloth would be challenging but, it would be awesome.
