Miranda Taylor_Individual Studio Project Proposal

1. What ideas, subject matter, and content are you interested in your work?

I would like to explore the idea of how the Bible and religion are the reason why women are seen as being the lesser and the "unworthy" of the sexes. I also would like work on a few ideas I have with Iconography/GLBT and Religion/Government.

2. What type of research do you feel would be helpful in developing you initial ideas for the work?

“Feminist Art” and Iconography

3. List 3 to5 reference works related to the above subject(s).

The Bible, Iconography in Christianity, Talking to different Men and women to get their view point, talk to a women reverend and see what she would have to say about women in the bible and the GLBT community.

4. What types of art media and other materials do you plan to work with or experiment with?
I plan to work with bed frames, windows, doors, mirrors, anything that I can get a hold of.

5. What types of formats do you plan to work with?

I plan on working with both 3D and 2D, Instillation and electronic.

6. Approximately how many and what sizes of works do you plan to make?

Large works that will extend from the wall that will create a space that is the unpleasant truth.

7. Describe your ideas for a work to be shown in the CC Student Activities space:

I am thinking of doing something that has to do with men and some women that keep/allow women to stay in the status that we are or have been.

8. Describe your Ideas for an installation and the Works you would like to make for the CC Display Case?
I would like to put a spin on the typical Christian Icon.

9. What do you hope to achieve by completing a substantial body of work this semester?

I hope to be able to actually get my ideas down in a sketch book and to be able to make them happen. And maybe be able to make something that isn’t so personal to me. To be able to get in a box.

  1. You have a good thing going for you Miranda because you know who you are and your art reflects that. You have wonderful style combined with great content and have no doubt of your future successes. Just keep working on those drawing skills and I can't wait to see what you put out this semester.

  2. Have you ever heard of Lilith? Most of what you might find on her would be Jewish legends of a baby killing succubus, but there is a rather influential medieval text that portrays her as the first wife of Adam before Eve. She was made from the same earth that made Adam but left the garden because he wouldn't let her be his equal. God then made Eve out of Adam's rib so that she could not be equal and we know where the story goes from there. The text is called The Alphabet of Ben Sira.If you didn't know about her I thought you might be interested in doing some research on the story. If you did know about her then cool beans.

  3. Big subject, Miranda. I like your idea to "talk to a women reverend and see what she would have to say about women in the bible and the GLBT community" This could be quite revealing. Your interests in domestic furnishings and objects also holds much promise. I think CD is right, working on drawing (and painting skills) can only help the message – as you seem to be starting to do with the personal belief piece.

Check out Kylie's reference as well. An alternate view from the established Christian iconography. Go, go, go!
