Christopher Demchak - IS/PP Proposal '10

1. What ideas, subject matter, and content are you interested in exploring in your work?

I’m mainly interested in doing portraiture and still-life. However, I’m open to abstract and non representational (concentrating on composition and color). I’ve always been somewhat of a minimalist so that may come into play (I did a small, stylized painting last semester that I would like to expand upon). I’m also interested In Pop Art and logos.

2. What type of research do you feel would be helpful in developing your initial ideas for the work? (artists, art historical movements, styles or time periods, social/political/historical issues, etc…)

A delve into Art History is always a tantalizing thought. Research on pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns; abstract art from Matisse and Picasso; a peek into Dadaism with Duchamp and Man Ray; minimalists like Sol LeWitt and Barnett Newman; and everything in between would be extremely helpful to me.

3. List three to five reference works related to the above subject(s):

Art: A Brief History by Stockstad

Art Cyclopedia www.artcyclopedia.com

Art History Directory www.arthistorydirectory.com

4. What types of art media and other materials do you plan to work with or experiment with?

When it comes down to it, I’m a purist; give me a pad of paper and some graphite/charcoal and I’m set. However, I want to open up and use just about anything and everything: cardboard, wood, Styrofoam, etc. I also want to hone in on my painting skills.

5. What types of formats do you plan to work with? (2D, 3D, combination of the two, installation, electronic…)

I plan on working mostly with mostly a combination of 2D and 3D, but also have a handful of just 2D works.

6. Approximately how many and what sizes of works do you plan to make?

Many and all sizes. Ten to fifteen works sound reasonable. Sizes would range from 9X12’’ to 20X30’’ (?)

7. Describe your ideas for a work to be shown in the CC Student Activities space:

I see lots (9-12?) of little minimalistic paintings of silhouetted animals in all colors. Some 2D, some 3D.

8. Describe your ideas for an installation and the work(s) you would like to make for the CC Display Case:

9. What do you hope to achieve by completing a substantial body of work this semester?

I hope to achieve a better understanding of specific materials, a new outlook on art (thinking outside the box), increased painting skills and learning how to turn my ideas into reality.

  1. Good Proposal. Clear and to the point.

"(I did a small, stylized painting last semester that I would like to expand upon)" Can you bring this to next class? Minimalism has a grand tradtion throughout 20th cent. art; and precedents in earlier art by other names. Kasmir Malevich (Russian artist who coined the term Suprematism to describe his ideas, "White on White" owned by MoMA THE classic ex)
So many others. Art History is a treasure trove of ideas for all of us.

Media/formats: Classic drawing/painting is certainly worth pursuing in the class. I would try and stay open to mixing things up a bit, as you've done and indicate a willingness towards, as your work progresses. In our "Post Modern" times, artists are questioning EVERYTHING, including a simple graphite drawing.

"I hope to achieve a better understanding of specific materials, a new outlook on art (thinking outside the box), increased painting skills and learning how to turn my ideas into reality." Sounds like a plan. Go for it!
