Kylie Sandt - Crit for Miranda Taylor - Persoanal Belief System

Description:
The painting is of a man's anus next to a bible and American flag. It is acrylic on a bed frame.

Interpretation:
It doesn't matter who or what we are or what we believe is right or wrong, we can still be American and believe in what we want.

Critique:
Finish painting. When using such an offensive image it is hard to draw attention away from it.

  1. I don't remember posting this. I had typed it in intending to edit and possibly add to it and then I thought I closed out the page intending to do it later. Did it automatically post it for me or was I half asleep and not paying attention.

Well anyway, I was describing your painting to my mom and I made very sure to include your intentions. Unfortunately, she was still quite offended, and what's more is I was offended that she was offended. It is really difficult to get non-artists and certain people to think open mindedly. I'm not sure why I felt that I should tell that story, I just sort of felt it necessary. I guess my point is that when dealing with a closed minded audience it may be hard to get your point across. But maybe not, maybe the average person is more competant than I think they are. I'm sorry, I guess this post is more babble than a useful critique.

I don't really have any suggestions for you. Have you thought of how you are going to display the piece? Is it going to rest on the floor? You mentioned in your proposal that you wanted to work with bed frames so I assume that you are going to do more in the future. I think an interesting installation if you did another one would be to include the rest of the bed. Thought it would plobably be extremely hard to find room for it in our gallery. As for this painting itself, I'm not really sure why it is on a bed frame in the first place. It adds a sexual atmosphere to the painting and I don't know if that was your intention. Other than that your paint handling is great, you've really flattered something that's not usually very flattering.

  2. I think its good that you shared that Kylie. I think a lot of us art people have trouble convincing the non artists from time to time. I know I do! It's unfortunate that your mom didn't like this piece but I think she'd appreciate it more if she knew what it was about.
When I first saw it I thought it was trying to say that men should respect women because they don't have to do the things we do, like give birth. But when she explained that it was a play on the idea that the Bible and the foundation of our country "came from a man's ass" it made so much more sense and I thought it was a brilliant idea (being a bit of a feminist, myself!) I can't wait to see it hanging on the wall with her first piece!

  3. Good stuff, KS. Yes, I'm glad you added your comments. Good comments, DL.

Wow, where to begin on Miranda's piece? It certainly hits the bulls-eye of controversy with regards to censorship issues, current precepts of artistic freedom – first amendment/freedom of speech issues, "taste" in contemporary culture, political/social power struggles, religion, sexism, feminism, the art audience and appropriateness in display, the public's right to be for-warned when about to encounter subject matter some will surely find distasteful, etc...

    Here we go!...
